“a Prada store in the middle of the desert”
Prada Marfa is a permanently installed sculpture by artists Elmgreen and Dragset, situated 2.3 km (1.4 mi) northwest of Valentine, Texas, just off U.S. Route 90, and about 60 km (37 mi) northwest of the city of Marfa. The installation was inaugurated on October 1, 2005. The artists called the work a "pop architectural land art project." The sculpture, realized with the assistance of American architects Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, cost $80,000 and was intended to never be repaired, so it might slowly degrade back into the natural landscape. Please do not vandalize this work of art. Whether you think it's stupid or not is irrelevant - let others enjoy it as it was intended.
Has bullet proof glass to prevent people from nicking the bags and shoes inside. Checkout the bullet marks where people have tried. Also seems to be a weird trinket collection building around back. Be sure to leave a trinket yourself!
Had this saved on our East to West trip on the 10 but we skipped it since it was 50 miles out of the way. Eeesh. Looks closer on the map than it is in real life. Wish we would have had the time
Good for your basic white girl insta pictures.
I know that vandals have struck again, and TexDOT had to determine if it was a billboard for Prada but this is still something worth seeing. If you are driving from Marfa, it seems like it takes forever. However, there is a Tethered Aerostat Radar System about halfway. It will give you something to talk about for a few miles.
I've had this on my list of places for a couple of years now and finally visited on 1/5/15. It was very exciting to finally get to see with a lot of cool places on the way there (coming from I-10) including an old abandoned town called Lobo, Texas. Be sure to bring a padlock with your initials to add to the lock fence behind the store!
The ranch land half way between Marfa and Valentine is the location where the ranch scenes of the movie, Giant (1956) was filmed.
Loved this! If you're a fan of public art ( doesn't hurt if you like Prada too), check it out!
This is a great way to imagine a few bored cowboy housewives shopping there, inspired by the J. American Princesses on TVs Sex in The City.
Boring and Basic.
Pure waste of time! Marfa is nothing short then wannabe place, do not waste time and fuel. Been there, wasted 4 hours I will never get back.
